Nigeria’s registered voters now over 70 million —INEC

AHEAD the 2015 general election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Tuesday, stated that Nigeria’s registered voters are now over 70 million, even as it stated that it has expanded polling units by 30,000 to the existing ones across the states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja. This   was contained in an INEC bulletin signed by the Director in charge of the Commission’s secretariat, Ishiaku A. Gali and made available to newsmen in Abuja, on Tuesday, in which the Commission put the total number of registered voters in the country at 70,383,427.

Following the latest development, the total number of polling units across the country’s 774 local government areas is now 150,000 from the initial 119,973. Gali disclosed that  the decision to create the additional polling units, was taken  last week Tuesday, during the Commission’s management meeting According to the breakdown of the approved re-allocation of 150,000 PUs nation-wide, Lagos top  the chart,  going by proportional distribution based on 150,000.with its registered voters put at 5,426,391, Lagos State got an additional 2870 polling units, making a total of 11,565. Kano State which had its registered voters at 4,751,818 and an  additional polling units of 2,053, bringing the total number of polling units to 9,809 polling units, came second. The Commission  further disclosed that Kano State had 10,127 PUs based on proportional distribution of 150,000 and 9,809 based on approved new PUs allocation. It followed  by registered voters for  Kaduna State, which had a registered voter of 3,743,815 and an additional polling units of 2,878, making the total polling units  7,485. For Katsina State with a population of 2,928,046, it got an additional 1,339 polling units to make the total number of polling stations in the state 3,818. Jigawa State, according to the breakdown, had a voter registration of 1,817,087 with an additional polling units of 346, making a total polling units od  3,677 polling stations. The 2010 Electoral Act (as amended), provided that each polling unit is expected to have not more than 500 voters.
