JAMB Withholds 27, 266 Results

Vows To Punish Erring Officials  • 1, 503,931 Sit For Exam • Only 3 Candidates Score 300 And Above • Imo Leads With 123,865 Candidates Or 8.34%

THE results of about 27, 266 candidates who sat for this year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) last Saturday would not be released due to their alleged involvement in large-scale examination malpractices, which the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) said it has detected.

One of the tricks is the embedding of prohibited external materials into their persons, to enable them bring such inside the examinations halls.

An example was two mobile handsets embedded in sandals in two separate locations in the country.

Similarly, at least 24 other mobile phones were confiscated from candidates from across the country, contrary to the guidelines released by the board

Announcing the results of the examination in Abuja yesterday, the Registrar/CEO of JAMB, Prof. Adedibu Ojerinde, said the new trend in the examination malpractice showed that candidates were determined to beat the system, but warned that the board would continue to devise strategies to beat such tricks on the part of the candidates.

He said the affected candidates have since been handed over to law enforcement agencies for prosecution even as he confirmed that unlike in the past, there had not been miracle centres this year. He attributed the development to the fact that the candidates were given the freedom to select where they wanted to sit for the examinations.

A total of 1, 503,931 applied for the 2012 examinations, while 1,384,644 candidates were confirmed to have results.

Details of the analysis of the applications by gender shows that 55.78 percent are males while 44.22 percent are females.

This translates to 883,082 males and 660,522 females.

336,330 candidates scored 1-169; 374,920 scored 170-199; 601,151 scored 200-249; 71, 339 scored 250-269; 901 scored between 270 and 299. Only three candidates scored between 300 and above.

Only 5,161 candidates recorded invalid results for the 2012 UTME as against 28,069 recorded last year and 96,451 in 2010.

Ojerinde attributed the drastic reduction in the number of invalid results to the increased enlightenment of candidates, and expressed the hope that with time, incidents of incomplete results would be eliminated.

About 141 virtually impaired candidates sat for the examination for the 2012 down from 200 in 2011. Also, a total of 181 prisoners, mainly from Ikoyi and Kaduna prisons sat for this year’s edition, while a total of 49 albinos registered and sat for the examinations.

Imo State has the highest registered candidates for the examination with 123,865 candidates or 8.24 percent followed by Delta with 88,876 or 5.91 percent; Anambra is third with 84,204 or 5.60 percent; Osun follows with 73,935 0r 4.92 percent; Oyo with 71,272 or 4.74 percent and Ogun follows with 71,173 or 4.73 percent.

Conversely, Jigawa tops the list of states in the Northwest with intakes with 11,529 or 0.77 percent; Kebbi recorded 7,364 or 0.59 percent; Yobe with 6,389 or 0.42 percent; Zamfara followed with 5,713 or 0.38 percent; Sokoto  5,664 or 0.38 percent while FCT comes last with 3,380 or 0.22 percent.

On examination malpractices, the JAMB boss confirmed reported incidents of fraud, noting that it was the desire of JAMB to ensure the integrity and sanctity of its examinations, saying its officials who were found to have hands in the fraud would not be spared.

He stated: “During the 2012 UTME, we had some disturbing news of extortion of innocent candidates by greedy proprietors, supervisors and invigilators.

“But we assure the public that all these people would be brought to book accordingly, just as I make bold to say that JAMB will not spare any culpable persons.

“We also know that those engaged in exam malpractices will stop at nothing to achieve their aims.

“For instance, in 2012, some discoveries and new tricks were on display by the crooks, where we discovered candidates embedding their mobile handset phones in sandals. This was discovered during our routine scanner checks after the candidates passed through the biometric verification machines.” Ojerinde added: “ A Cursory look at some of their antics will show negative ingenuity on parade, but we say that no matter how smart they think they are, they would be caught and flushed.”

Investigations conducted across all the accredited JAMB examination centers in Lagos State revealed that many schools, through their workers, turned the exercise into money-spinning ventures.

Before the students were allowed entry into their various examination premises, the UTME officials stressed the need to discard any material/luggage, other than those relevant for the examination.

Security officials, led by the officers of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDS), enforced this instruction, making the students seek the best places to hide their valuables.

Some persons promptly began demanding money to keep bags in a “warehouse”.

Some security personnel who caught candidates with handsets seized same but released them on payment of up to N1,000 each. And they made fortunes.

There were also reported instances of supervisors accepting fees to enable students carry in handsets and even bring in already solved answer sheets.

2012 UTME: Only 3 candidates scored above 300–JAMB

The Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, Prof. ’Dibu Ojerinde, on Friday said only three out of the 1.5 million candidates who sat for the 2012 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations scored 300 marks and above.

Ojerinde said this while announcing the release of the results of the examination, which took place last Saturday.

He explained that other categories of scores showed that 336,330 candidates scored between 1-169 marks, 374,920 scored between 170-199 marks, while 601,151 scored between 200-249 marks.

Others were 71,339 candidates, who scored between 250 and 269. On the whole, 72,243 scored more than 250 marks.

According to the JAMB registrar, the number of invalid/incomplete results is drastically reduced when compared to what obtained two years ago.

Ojerinde said, “In 2010, 96,451 results were recorded invalid, while in 2011, the figure reduced drastically to 28,069.

“Hence, it became imperative for us to insist on the need for candidates to be most careful, just as we have stressed that in any examination, taking time to read and understand instructions is part of the examination.

“The aggressive and sustained awareness campaign mounted by the board in the last two years has produced positive results, as the figure for the 2012 UTME has been drastically reduced to 5,161.”

He announced that a total of 52 centres, with Rivers State having the highest number of 24, have had their results withheld on suspicion of examination malpractices.

While giving a breakdown of institutions with the highest number of applicants, the JAMB boss said the University of Lagos was first with 83,865 applicants, representing 5.58 per cent of the total applications.

He said, “Our experience this time is consistent with previous trends – that Nigerians have a higher preference for universities ahead of other tertiary institutions.

“Unfortunately, these universities still have constraints with their carrying capacities. For instance, UNILAG, which took the lead this year with 83,865 candidates recorded the highest applications of 99,115 in 2011 UTME and from the carrying capacity figure given by NUC, it can only admit 9,507.

“These figures are only for most preferred choice and do not include those who chose UNILAG as their second choice.”

JAMB releases 2012 UTME results

MARCH 30, 2012

The Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board has released the results of the 2012 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, with only three candidates scoring above 300.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the results of 27,266 candidates across eight states were withheld for various reasons.
This was stated by JAMB Registrar/Chief Executive, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, at a news conference in Abuja.
A total of 1,503,931 candidates were registered for the 2012 UTME, which held across the country on March 24, making it the one with the highest number of registered candidates since the existence of JAMB.
Contrary to earlier fears that the Boko Haram sect would disrupt the exam in some Northern states, Ojerinde, said the State Security Service and other security agencies had been engaged to deal with any security threat.
The exam proceeded on the set date without any security problem.
At the news conference, Ojerinde, the JAMB Registrar, listed Abia, Benue, Cross River, Delta, Imo, Lagos, Nasarawa and Rivers as the affected states, due to malpractice such as extortion of money by some examination officials.
“In 2012 UTME, we had some disturbing news of extortion of money from innocent candidates by greedy proprietors and supervisors all these persons will be brought to book,” he said, adding that the outcome of investigation would determine if more results would be released..
Ojerinde said 72, 243 scored 250 and above while 336,330 scored below 170.
He said 374,920 candidates scored between 170 and above, 601,151 candidates scored between 200 and 249 while 901 scored between 270 and 299.
“In 2010, 96,451 results were recorded invalid, while in 2011, the figure reduced drastically to 28,069, due to sensitisation on 2011 UTME.
“For the 2012 UTME, the number was drastically reduced to 5,161; the board will continue to work to ensure that the incidence of incomplete and invalid results is totally wiped out,” he stated.
Ojerinde said that Imo had the highest number of applicants with 123,865 candidates; Delta came second with 88,876 candidates while Anambra placed third with 84,204 candidates.
Conversely, FCT recorded the lowest number with 3,380 candidates, Sokoto placed next with 5, 664 candidates while 5,713 candidates sat from Zamfara.
He said the University of Lagos recorded the highest applicants with 83,865 candidates; Nnamdi Azikiwe University came second with 82,148 candidates while University of Benin came third with 80,048 candidates.
He said arrangement had been made for candidates to check their results online using JAMB web site, www.myjambonline.com, and using the scratch card used earlier for registration.
More details later.

1,503,931 candidates to write 2012 UTME – JAMB registrar

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board on Tuesday said 1,503,931 candidates would write this year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination on March 24.
JAMB Registrar, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, stated this while briefing newsmen on Tuesday in Abuja, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.
According to him, this is the highest number of registered candidates the board has recorded since inception.
No fewer than 1,493,603 candidates registered for the 2011 UTME, while 1,375,642 registered for the examination in 2010.
The registrar said this year’s figure was a marginal increase of 10,338 candidates over the 2011 figure, as against an increase of 117,961 candidates recorded in 2011 over the 2010 figure.
He explained that the examination would hold simultaneously in 375 towns in the country and in Ghana, Cameroun, Republic of Benin, United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, and South Africa.
“It is worthy to note that there is a remarkable increase in the number of registered candidates in all our foreign centres.
“No doubt this underscores the acceptability of our tertiary educational system around the world. Many Nigerians are wishing to come back home for tertiary education,” he said.
