OPERATION-PROTECT-YOUR-EKITI-VOTE #15:  What REALLY Happened In Ido-Osi LGA on April 25, 2009?

May 3, 2009

Dear All:

A letter written April 27, 2009 addressed to “The Resident Electoral Commissioner, INEC, Ekiti State, Onigari Area, Ado-Ekiti” by “Action Congress, Ido/Osi LG Headquarters, No. B46, Ijemu Street, Opposite St. Benedicts Primary School, Ido-Ekiti”  is used to formulate the table of  incidents excerpted below.

The April 25 elections in Ido-Osi LGA – all its 11 wards, with possibility for salvaging of 3 wards – shall stand cancelled until the next time when non-violence can be assured by its citizens and security forces.

Electorate fled, leaving the thugs to stuff ballot boxes with thumb-printed ballot papers for the ward done at the residence of MRS. 10

Usi Ward

Situation here was the worst in the LG. Immediately upon arrival of INEC officials, AC members and party agents were chased away from polling booths and threatened with death by a lot of vicious-looking and fully-armed Mobile Police numbering about fifteen (15) with countless thugs armed with various dangerous and led by MR. YOMI AYORINDE ( a former Caretaker Committee Chairman of Ido-Osi LGA appointed by MR. SEGUN ONI) and one CORPORAL  ILIYA.   PDP agents, backed by Mobile Police, went in and out of various polling units, taking ballot boxes away to unknown destinations and back, presumably to the home of a former Minister of the Federation located within the town, where information reveals that over-night ballot-stuffing had occurred and also at adjacent location at the Federal Technical College premises. All were later used to stuff-up with PDP-favored numbers. Some AC polling agents were told to make a choice between their lives and death, except they cooperate, accounting for some results sheets being signed under duress.  But one elderly AC Party agent MR. KUNLE ADAMOLEKUN manning Polling Unit 016 at Usi High School bluntly refused to sign the election result.  Based on AC protest by party agent MR. BAMIDELE FOLORUNSHO, result of Polling Unit 002 at Health Center, Usi, was cancelled by the Ward Electoral Officer.  We have the names of all the AC party agents who witnessed the above malpractices in Idiagbon Unite 012, Upper Gate Unit 007, Technical Unit 007, Aafin Town Hall Unit 011, CAC Unit 003 and Oke-Odi Unit005.

INCIDENT AT THE COLLATION CENTRE OF THE INDEPENDENT NATIONAL ELECTORAL COMMISSION, IDO-OSI, LGA

(a)    As required by the Electoral Regulations, all the results from the various wards that were ready were been collated at the Independent Natonal Electoral Commission Office, Ipere-Ekiti Road,Ido-Ekiti, a government owned Land-Rover Jeep, white colour marked B DRUM 21 at the rooftop and with Registration No. FG 509 VOL driven by somebody in Mobile Police uniform came to the venue of collation and tried to forcefully gain entrance into the premises.  However, it could not do so easily because of the large number of crowd at the entrance and was trying to still have its way.  It was in the process of this, that some very meticulous people within the crown who were eagle-eyed sighted some sacks loaded with already thumb-printed ballot-papers in the vehicle.  The said vigilant members of the crowd demanded the source of he said Ballot papers and their usage w which it was going to be put.  Unknown to the crowd, there were some hidden armed (PDP) thugs in the Vehicle and they now came out and started shooting sporadically into the crowd in other to scare people away and get away with the Vehicle and its contents.  It was during this melee that two members of the Action Congress (AC) were shot.  With this the PDP thugs, were able to escape.  MR. SEGUN AJAYI, male and a Carpenter of about 39 years old and resident at D45 Idofin Street, Ido-Ekiti, was equally shot and fatally wounded at his right leg.  The leg has now been amputated.  MRS. BOSE ONIOKOBO, a Tailor of about 30 years and resident of Imila Street, Ido Ekiti was seriously wounded a nd present lying critically ill at the Federal Medical Center, Ido-Ekiti.  The photographs of the two affected persons are herewith attached.  We are also in possession of the video recording showing the situation of things when the Vehicle above was at the Independent  National Electoral Commission office and attempted to forces its way in.

(a)     As at the time of this melee which took place at about 5.49 pm, the results from USI, IFAKI and ORIN/ORA were still being expected, even though they had concluded elections from these Areas by about 1.00pm.  Equally, from the reports of our Hon. Kehinde Ogunlade, who was the Action Congress (AC) party agent inside the Collation Centre, it was only the results of the elections at the Ayetoro Wards I and II, and the Ido Ward1 that were collated and accredited before the LGA Electoral officer announced the postponement of the collation.  Thus at present, the results of the other Wards in Ido-Osi Local Government Area have not been officially accepted and accredited by INEC.

(b)   The results from these Wards, we strongly suspect and reasonably believe, were deliberately withheld back and not submitted in order to fine-tune same so as to make sure that the excess votes were removed from the Ballot Papers to avoid any taint of over-voting which give way and expose their nefarious activities.

(c)    While our teeming Party members were still awaiting h continuation of the collation exercise, there had been reports of the burning down of the INEC office with the vital documents pertaining to the Re-Run Election within Ido-Osi LGA, including results already submitted, but not yet accredited.

Conclusively, it is our opinion that the overall consideration of the voting exercise within Ido-Osi LGA depicts a clear departure from what was envisaged by the Electoral Act.  The Voting was characterized by various malpractices, breaches and disenfranchisement of voters who were not allowed to exercise their free will.

We therefore demand an official cancellation of the results from the Wards where the results have not been received, collated and accredited at the Ido-Osi LGA, INEC office to wit: IFAKI, USI and ORIN/ORA.  We also demand the validation of results from the three Wards that have been collated and accredited and the same be made the authentic results emanating from the Ido-Osi LGA.

Thanks in advance for your cooperation.

Yours faithfully:

Hon. Pa Adunola Olaiya Chairman, AC , Ido-Osi LGA

Prince Akintade Olayisade, Leader AC , Ido-Osi LGA

Hon. (Evang.) Emi Bobade, Leader AC, Ido-Osi LGA
