Martins, Agbonlahor thrill England with goals

Nigerian players set Europe ablaze with goals over the weekend as the duo of Obafemi Martins and Gabriel Agbonlahor registered their names on the scorers sheet in the English Premier League, while Chinedu Obasi Ogbuke’s goal secured 3-2 victory for Hoffenheim, setting the tone for top of the table chase in Germany.

Super Eagles striker, Obafemi Martins scored Newcastle’s second goal of the night at The St James’ Park in the 88th minute, after compatriot and Newcastle team-mate, Shola Ameobi had level scores for Toon against Wigan. In another English Premier League clash on Saturday, Gabriel Agbolahor was accorded the man of the match with two powerful strikes against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

Elsewhere, in the German Bundesliga match on Saturday, Dream Team IV striker, Chinedu Obasi Ogbuke helped the German club, 1899 Hoffenheim with a decider against Wolfsburg scoring the club’s third goal in the 69 minute to leave score line at 3-2, which helped Hoffenheim keep the German Bundesliga title chase alive.

Super Eagles skipper, Nwankwo Kanu could only managed a 15 minutes action on Saturday against West Ham, in a match that ended goalless at the Upton Park (home ground of West Ham United). However, John Utaka was missing in the encounter due to injury.

Nigeria-born Scotland international, Christopher Iwelumo was also on target for Wolverhampton Wanderers in the English Championship.

Iwelumo registered Wolves’ goal early in the eight minute, Jones added the second for Wolves 17th minute in the first half, and Pearce reduced the tally for Southampton in a match that ended 2-1 on Saturday. Meanwhile, Olofinjana’s Stoke City suffered 5-0 defeat at Old Trafford yesterday in England.
