Iwu Is A Danger To Democracy, Says NLC

By Alex Emeje, Senior correspondent, Abuja

Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has lent its voice to the calls for the removal of chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Maurice Iwu, because of the growing number of elections that have been nullified by election petitions tribunals so far.

The Congress described Iwu as “a danger to democracy.”

The labour body also expressed concern over the ability of the INEC boss to conduct fresh polls as directed by the various tribunals.

In a statement by its President, Abdulwaheed Omar, the NLC said that given more funds to non- transparent body like Iwu-led INEC “is like putting a cat in charge of fried fish.”

The statement added that there was an urgent need for Iwu’s removal as the reasons adduced by the tribunals for the nullification of the elections were bordered on “the scandalous conduct of the INEC boss.”

It said the judges have shown that where INEC had not perpetuated fraud, it connived with electoral crooks to subvert the wishes of the people, while some candidates were deliberately excluded by the electoral body.

According to NLC, conducting a fresh election in some of these constituencies as ordered by the tribunals was tantamount to giving the electorate a chance to redeem their civil responsibility by electing leaders of the choice.

The Congress called on the National Assembly and patriotic Nigerians to ensure the replacement of Iwu and his cohorts in INEC with men and women of integrity who would restore the people’s confidence in the country.
