Nigeria ex-governor denied bail in corruption case

KADUNA, Nigeria (Reuters) – A Nigerian court refused bail on Monday to James Ibori, a former oil state governor who is accused of looting more than $80 million of public funds and trying to bribe police to stop investigating him.

Ibori’s case is regarded as a test of President Umaru Yar’Adua’s promise to fight corruption because Ibori was one of the main financial backers of Yar’Adua’s campaign for the April presidential election.
