Best brains in the power sector are converging to find a lasting solution to the problem of electricity in the country.

This is coming as president Umaru Yar’adua is preparing to declare emergency in the power sector.

The stakeholders are expected to brainstorm in a conference that comes up at the Rockview hotel on the November 29, 2007.

The roll call include: Hajiya Fatima Balaraba Ibrahim, Minister of State, Energy (Power), Engr Joseph Makoju, Special Adviser to the President on Power and many others are scheduled to speak in the forth coming national conference of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) District Society of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN).

A statement made available to Daily Trust said, “Rebuilding value system in the power sector” is the theme of this year’s national conference.

Chairman Organising Committee, Mr. Usman Gur Mohammed noted that, “this is necessary because the value system has been significantly affected by two important phenomena; the power Sector Reform Act and massive deployment of pre-payment metering system in the country”.

He also noted that this is the first time an analysis of the power sector reform implementation will be done by world acclaimed experts.

According to Mohammed, three notable international experts in the power sector, Mr. Peter Butt of International Energy Solutions (IESL), United Kingdom, Mr. Kadiyala Durga Prasad of Enzen Global Solutions Ltd, Hyderabad, India and Alhaji Rasaq Jaiyeola of AJ Silicon Consultants Nigeria Ltd are key speakers in the conference. While Mr. Butt will speak on “Promulgation and Implementation of Power Sector Reform Act: Its implications for the Development of the Sector”, Mr. Prasad will address the topic: “Mass Deployment of Pre-Payment Metering System in Nigeria; Challenges and Control Problems based on Global Experiences while Alhaji Jaiyeola will speak on IFAC Standard for Professional Accountants’ on Information Technology.

Other discussants include Mr. Waqar Haider, Senior Energy Specialist of the World Bank, Engr Mrs. B.A. Lijofi, former Executive Director (Distribution) PHCN, and Mr. Ivan Anya of BI Technologies Ltd.

The conference, which has Prince Adebanjo Abiodun Babington-Ashaye, President of ICAN as Special Guest, will be followed on Friday November 30 by the Society’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) designed only for members, the ICAN President and Council members. The AGM will receive reports and accounts and new officials to run the affairs of the District will be elected.

Meanwhile, the country’s most distinguished senior power business leaders, legal advisers of power market operators, entrepreneurs, IPP investors and public sector decision makers will converge for the 2nd Nigerian Power Business Leaders Summit in Ibom Golf Resort, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State between December 12 – 14.

The three-day summit packaged by PowerCap Limited, a foremost provider of manpower development and outsourcing services for the power and energy sectors, provides opportunity for leaders to be updated on sector development and compare notes on opportunities and challenges.

Mr. Biodun Ogunleye MD/CEO, PowerCap Limited, while describing the Summit as a powerful power business knowledge exchange platform for sector leaders in both the private and public sectors, said the forum was quite compelling as it will build on the gains of the maiden edition and previous successful power sector capacity building initiative held at Obudu cattle ranch, United Kingdom and Abuja.
