James Watson Retires After Racial Remarks

James D. Watson, the eminent biologist who ignited an uproar last week with remarks about the intelligence of people of African descent, retired today as chancellor of the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory on Long Island and from its board.

    I really don’t understand why we always get so worked up and asking them to quit their jobs when somebody outside of our race makes derogatory remarks about us. People have their stereotypical beliefs that are passed on to them by their forebears which are further cemented by what they see around them about their subject matter. What have we done, collectively as a race, by our actions, activities and behaviors to disabuse the minds of these people about these stereotypical beliefs. We might as well let them say what’s on their minds for us to gain such information because what they believe but don’t say might be worse, if not injurious to our well being.
