Lagos, Nigeria – The Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Patricia Etteh, has insisted she won’t quit her high office, even as pressure mounts on her to step down in the wake of her indictment by a House panel over the 628 million naira (US$5 million) house renovation scandal.

The nine-member Ad-hoc panel of the lower legislative chamber concluded, among others, due process was not followed in the award of the contracts for the renovation of the official residences of the Speaker and her deputy.

The findings have triggered widespread calls on the Speaker to step down, ahead of the chamber’s consideration of the report in two weeks.

But in her first reaction since the report was issued Wednesday, Etteh denied she was indicted by the panel and insisted she will remain in office until the House debates the report.

"It is not true that the panel has indicted the Speaker. It is also unfair to embark on media trial of the Speaker when the House she presides over has not pronounced her guilty," Etteh’s Spokesperson, Funke Egbemode, said in a statement.
