A Nigerian electoral tribunal ordered President Umaru Yar’Adua to respond within 14 days to a petition filed against his election victory.

A Nigerian electoral tribunal on Thursday ordered President Umaru Yar’Adua to respond within 14 days to a petition filed against his election victory by one of his main rivals, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Official results of the presidential election in April gave Yar’Adua a landslide victory but local and foreign observers reported widespread vote-rigging.

European Union monitors condemned the polls as "not credible" and "far below basic international standards". Abubakar’s petition against Yar’Adua’s victory was filed on May 22 but so far the case has been bogged down in technicalities. The tribunal said on Thursday its next hearing on the petition would be on Aug. 13.
