Nigcomsat-1 will fast-track telecom market

With the successful launch of the Nigeria Communication Satellite (NigComSat-1) into the space Nigeria has become a major player in the robust world telecom market which is projected to hit N128.2 trillion ($1.2 trillion) by 2010.

President Musa Yar’Adua made this observation over the weekend in Abuja at the ceremony marking the switching on of the satellite to paying customers and delivery of its in-orbit to NIGCOMSAT Limited.

YarAdua noted with pleasure that "Nigeria will start generating income from the space industry, which was hitherto restricted to the technologically developed countries" stressing that the project has transformed Nigeria from a consumer of bandwidth to a provider.

The president who was represented by Babagana Kingibe, Secretary to the Government of the Federation stressed that with the successful launch of NigComSat-1, Nigeria had signalled its determination to be a significant player in todayâ
