Lagos, Nigeria (AHN) – Newcastle United star Obafemi Martins made headline news around the world following his claims to have escaped an assassination attempt in Lagos, Nigeria on Monday.

Martins revealed to the press that masked men had sprayed his Mercedes car with gunfire while he and a friend stopped at a gas station close to his Victoria Garden City residence. The Super Eagles striker said he escaped unhurt, but his friend, Remi Onipede, was wounded in the hand.

However, on Friday, the Nigeria police said Obafemi Martins lied against himself and no such incident took place.

Martin’s told The Sun newspaper on Tuesday that the attack took place on Monday night when he had stopped to buy fuel for his generator.

"We just tried to get fuel but instead got surrounded by armed men just in front of the fuel station." Martins told the paper.

"I didn’t know their mission but they looked scary and mean, my nerves were completely dead when I saw the guns.

"They didn’t wait to talk and just started shooting at the car, it was hell and I was dead in heart and soul."They shot indiscriminately and tried to kill all the occupants of the car. I am wondering who could be behind this.
