Bob Geldof guest-edited today’s issue of Germany’s biggest-selling daily newspaper, Bild, replacing the tabloid’s usual saucy front page with a picture of an emaciated African child.
Geldof has taken on the editorship of Bild – the nearest equivalent in Germany to the Sun – as the country’s chancellor, Angela Merkel, prepares to host the G8 summit next week, where she has pledged to make Africa a high-profile issue.

Today’s front page of Bild, which published by Axel Springer, carried the picture of the emaciated child with the headline "End this! Now!".

Geldof wrote a front-page commentary stating that Germany’s leaders could "end the misery" in Africa and that they had the power to "change things and people if you want to". The paper also published an interview with Ms Merkel by Geldof.

Other contributors to the paper included US president George Bush reiterating his commitment to fighting Aids in Africa, U2 singer Bono echoing Geldof’s aims and George Clooney highlighting the violence in Sudan’s Darfur region.

Even the sports and celebrity pages of Bild were devoted to Africa. The paper ran a photo montage of an African dream football team, led by Chelsea’s Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba.

Last May, Bono guest-edited an edition of the Independent as part of a media tie-up to raise money for Red, the singer’s initiative to tackle Aids in Africa.
