Nigeria strike averted

The Nigerian team have confirmed that their threatened strike has been called off and their 2008 African Cup of Nations game against Uganda will go ahead on Saturday.

The overseas-based players in the Super Eagles squad missed their scheduled flight from Kenya to Uganda on Thursday demanding a US$3,000 bonus for beating Kenya in a friendly in Nairobi last weekend.

Despite the players eventually boarding a later flight on Thursday evening, the shadow of a strike lingered on Friday morning.

Striker Nwankwo Kanu ended the speculation on Friday saying: "We have agreed to play the game and not to strike."
