Welfare is not desirable social invention, and in any case, Nigeria does not have nearly enough money to run even a minimalist a welfare system. Nor do we have the organizational backend to support such a system. What Nigerians need, more than anything else infrastructure to drive and support economic activity. Let's have electricity, good roads, security, urban planning. If these basic needs can be met, our native creativeness will take care of the rest.

The right of a citizen in any civilized culture is access to basic means of livelihood, weather physically challenged, unemployed or aged. That is what social security stands for. Failure to recognize the importance of social security in the society, result in high rate of violent crimes, normlessness, and other forms of societal alienation. It is time Nigerians wake up and demand their citizens (more...)

What happens to a farmer in the village at 65 years old!
What happens to a graduate, which is unemployed after 10year after graduating from the university !
What about people with disability!
How will such ones have access to shelter, food and medicine!

Dominic:

I completely agree with you.

However, in the interim, there are too many RIGHT NOW who need some kind of welfarist intervention. Those will be happy to be provided some relief.

Uncle Bo,
We still need to have some organizational setup in place to deal with the needy few. Otherwise, the money will end up in the wrong hands as usual. If government concentrates on establishing and maintaining the needed basic infrastructure, the economy will improve from increased productivity at all levels and there will be jobs and earnings for Nigerians.

Dayo:

If these stop-gap welfarist programme is directed through faith-based and secular non-governmental organizations with strict performance indicators and controls set up, government can still have time to "concentrate on establishing and maintaining the needed basic infrastructure, the economy will improve from increased productivity at all levels and there will be jobs and earnings for Nigerians."

I generally agree with the comments provided so far. However, I am convinced there are those in need of immediate welfare intervention such as those with severe disabilities, the long term unemployed, the dirt poor, the mentally incapacitated etc. Such people cannot afford to wait on the long term benefits of a solid infrastructure.
Unless we want to foster a beggar under class these people need to be catered for and given a little dignity. This will artificially narrow the bridge between the haves and have-nots in the short term and give the government time to roll out a proper infrastructure as opposed to the pay as we go patchwork projects nigeria has endured to this point.

Create another government-funded agency in a country full of government agencies that are plagued with civil servants who steal from them, then take the money to buy thousands of dollars' worth of Italian shoes???

...Yeah, genius. That'll work. And when it does, can you please find out if Senator Ehigie Edobor Uzamere of Edo State South can take some of that welfare money to take care of his daughter Tara A. Uzamere??? Seems like the cheap bastard won't take one penny of his millions to care of his own daughter. He abandoned her when she was a baby. Right now she needs money for books and tuition at Long Island College Hospital School of Nursing in Brooklyn, New York

INTRODUCTION

The Faith in Nigeria Project envisions . . .

. . . a Nigeria in which:

Nigerians feel proud to be Nigerians;

Like respect, patriotism has to be earned; it cannot be coaxed from citizens by a country that is insincere with the handling of the national treasury, practices selective justice, pays lip service on issues of social responsibility to its citizens, and is generally mediocre in all ramifications of human endeavour. A Nigerian cassava producer can be said to feel more pride in his country than the average basketball player, since the cassava farmer carries in his bosom the satisfaction of knowing that, because of
