October 24, 2008 | 16 Comments
On Tuesday, October 9, 2007, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA), a major United States stock market index, attained its highest value ever at 14,164.53. Since opening at 40.94 on May 26, 1896, the DJIA has increased steadily, despite several periods of decline.

MONDAY QUARTERBACKING - The Interesting Case Of MENDing Nigeria (by Mobolaji Aluko)
July 7, 2009 | 3 Comments
As a one-time avid chess-player and local champion myself, I must say that I enjoyed Olusola Osineye's essay titled "The End Game: MEND Versus Federal Republic Of Nigeria " (reproduced below), in which he used the imagery of chess to analyze the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger-Delta MEND's situation up to date, and how it might close out the end-game.

The Burden Of Being A Nigerian - Dele Momodu
June 13, 2009 | 2 Comments
I spent most of last week in Washington DC and the days were well spent. Everywhere I went, the topic was always Nigeria. Nigeria seems to have become a major burden for most of its citizens. Wherever two or more Nigerians are gathered, there is usually nothing else to discuss than the failure of leadership, and our steady slide into apocalyptic state. To say everyone is worried is an understatement.

Some Quick Thoughts On Multi-Partyism & Electoral Reform In Nigeria (by Bolaji Aluko)
December 22, 2007 | 2 Comments
Should there be re-imposed a two-party system a la Babangida of the SDP/NRC "a little to the left, a little to the right" fame - as recently being canvassed again by the man himself (see attached) - rather than the present apparently unwieldy 50-party system a la Obasanjo/Iwu?

The Facts Soludo Left Out (by Ayo Teriba)
December 28, 2006 | 2 Comments
Information provided by Professor Charles Soludo, the Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), at the July 6 2004 Bankers' Committee meeting, reveals that by the end of March 2004, 62 of the 89 banks were sound, 14 were on border-line, 11 were unsound, while two rendered no returns. A number of the ailing banks were also said to have overdrawn their positions with the CBN.

STAR ESSAY - We Are Boko Haram (by Aliyu Tilde)
August 16, 2009 | 1 Comments
It is futile to speak on the halal or haram of boko. I rather intend to discuss the cultrual roots of the movement. But first let us settle the issue of nomenclature which some writers got wrong.

MID-WEEK MUSINGS - The Differences Between Nigeria And Ghana, And What Nigeria Can Do About Them (Essay By Bolaji Aluko)
January 6, 2009 | 1 Comments
Other than those, there is nothing we can do with our non-ideological beginnings, or the fact that crude oil was discovered BEFORE our independence, (not AFTER it like in Ghana), or our indisciplined military history, although some would (unwisely) wish a military come-back, bloody or not. We just have to bear those as variables that will for ever make Nigeria distinct from Ghana.
