Nigerians In The US Raise Funds For Haiti
A group of Nigerians in the U.S. has launched an appeal to raise funds for the victims of the earthquake in Haiti. The group, under the aegis of Nigeria Global Diaspora Committee (NGDC), is rallying support from various Nigerian organisations across the globe to assist victims of the quake.
The Convener of the group, Ms Jumoke Akin-Taylor, told Newsmen that the appeal for the relief effort had received pledges from Nigerians.
She said the money realised would be made available to some Haiti Diaspora organisations or a relief organisation working in Haiti or through the Red Cross.
She said the Organisation for the Advancement of Nigerians (OAN) has been designated as the receiving organisation for the effort on behalf of the NGDC.
Akin-Taylor said the organisation would assist Nigerians in the U.S. willing to go to Haiti for on-the-ground relief work. "But they must be prepared to pay their way to go to Haiti," she said.
"While we acknowledge the option for individual Nigerians to send money to various organisations, such as the Red Cross, we believe that the special historical relationship between Haiti and Nigeria makes it incumbent on both the Nigerian government and Nigerians in the Diaspora to do something," she added.
The UN on Friday launched a 550 million dollar emergency appeal for Haiti.
UN officials say so far 310 million dollars in international aid has been pledged for the relief effort.
The Red Cross estimates that at least 50,000 people have died from the disaster, which destroyed about 50 per cent of the buildings in Port-au-Prince, the Haitian capital.

Announcing a Nigerian Diaspora Fundraising Effort for Haiti's Earthquake victims
The Nigeria Global Diaspora Committee (NGDC) hereby announces a concerted effort in our Nigerian communities living abroad to raise funds for Haiti's Earthquake victims. The Committee is comprised of present and past leaders of the various Nigerian Organizations across the world (see a partial list below) who have resolved to work together to coordinate the efforts of all Nigerians and friends of Nigeria in order to deliver impactful contributions to the progress and advancement of Nigeria and the Nigerian community both at home and abroad.
Latest information is that possibly more than 100,000 people may have died from the earthquake in Haiti and after-tremors; hundreds of thousands more displaced; and a large number of buldings demolished completely. Thousands more may die if relief is not rushed to various parts of the country quickly.
While we acknowledge the option for individual Nigerians to send money to various organizations such as the Red Cross, the Clinton Foundation, etc., we also believe that the special historical relationship between Haiti and Nigeria makes it incumbent on both the Nigerian government and Nigerians in the Diaspora to "do something" specifically in our own names to let the world know that we care.
In general, for large donation-receiving organizations, it is difficult for their central offices to track specific community donations made via credit card or phone texting of money. Consequently, we are providing two sets of options in order to be able to TRACK the donations of our community:
1. Via PayPal (the preferred and fastest method)
https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=11253003
This method allows you to donate electronically via your credit card, your PayPal account, or your bank account.
An automatic receipt will be sent to you. [For PayPal's records, the Organization for the Advancement of Nigerians (OAN) has been designated as the receiving organization for this particular effort on behalf of the NGDC. See more info on OAN below.]
2. By sending checks and money orders:

All monies will be receipted, and are tax deductible. A donors' list will eventually be published, and ALSO sent to each donor whose email address is known. Anonymous donors will be given identification numbers (ID#s) to be able to identify themselves in such a list.
Please make all PayPal donations, as well as checks and money orders payable as quickly as possible, preferably by Friday, January 22, 2010.
Depending on the total amount collected via OAN, we will make the money available either to Wyclef Jean's "Yele Haiti Foundation" diaspora organization [http://www.yele.org ] ; or add it to money already made directly to Red Cross via our effort, again all on behalf of the Nigerian Diaspora.
Finally, Nigerians who are willing to undergo a short training (for example Red Cross or other relief preparation training) and are prepared to pay their way to go to Haiti for an on-the-ground relief work should send their information to joan.Osa Oviawe at joanoviawe@gmail.com (Telephone. 509-332-3875) or to Dr. J. Wakil at jwakili@yahoo.com (Tel: 816-521-0272.) We will compile the list and convene accordingly as members of an intending Nigeria Diasprora Haiti In-Country Relief Group.
Thank you.

Haiti Journal: "Beyond Horror"
http://globalvoicesonline.org/specialcoverage/haiti-earthquake-2010/
At 16:53 local time on January 12, the Caribbean nation of Haiti was struck by an earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale. In a country routinely referred to as the poorest in the western hemisphere, the devastation has been dramatic and widespread. In addition to the mounting casualties and loss of life and property, the damage to the country's already fragile infrastructure has been severe. The earthquake was centered just outside of Port-au-Prince, the capital, and was followed by several strong aftershocks.
In spite of power outages and interruptions in phone service, and generally poor access to Internet in Haiti, citizen media reports of the earthquake are coming in, with blogs, photos, Twitter, phone, mapping platforms, and streaming video and radio all being used to report conditions.
