President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, this afternoon, unveiled his ministerial team, with, at least, one appointee, Professor Dora Akunyili, appearing to be miscast for the job of information and communications minister. The former Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, was asked, today, to oversee the ministry once handled by John Odey. The latter is now the environment minister. At worse, observers expected Dora to be appointed into the health ministry, either as a senior or junior minister. Now, the ministry will be overseen by Professor Babatunde Osotimehin as minister, while Dr. A.I Hong will serve as minister of state. The reshuffling also saw Dr. Shamsudeen Usman, the former finance minister, appointed as deputy chairman of the Federal Executive Council as well as National Planning Minister. Mr. Remi Babalola, the minister of state in the finance ministry, was not moved. He retained his junior ministerial position, meaning that no substantive finance minister emerged today.
The ministry of education went to Dr. Sam Egwu, while the headship of the Federal Capital Territory was given to Senator Aliero. Both appointees were former governors and colleagues of the president, when he was governor of Katsina state.
The newly created Niger Delta Ministry will be headed by Elder G. Orubebe.
