Who Is the Greatest Nigerian Athlete of All Time?
September 20, 2007 |  M.A. Aluko (Archives)

As I watch the current feats of great Nigerian athletes in sports such as football (soccer), American football, basketball, etc., and I remember the accomplishments of other past star athletes, only one question comes to my mind --- Who is the greatest of them all?
I have my opinions.
Athletes that top my list:

Hakeem the Name:
Hakeem Olajuwon

Sport: Baskeball

Nickname: "The Dream"

Why we love him:

- He led the Houston Rockets to 2 NBA Championships, in 1994 & 1994

- Considered one of the 5 greatest centers of all time (Shaquille O'Neal, Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul Jabbar)

- Known for his Dream Shake move to evade his defenders

- Only player in NBA history to win the NBA MVP, Defenensive Player of the Year, and Playoff MVP in the same season

- One of the 50 greatest NBA players of all time

Name: Christian Okoye

Sport: American Football

Nickname: "The Nigerian Nightmare"

Why we love him:

- 1989 AFC (American Football Conference) Offensive Player of the year

- Inducted into the Kansas City Chiefs Hall of Fame

- Though his career was cut short to 6 years by injury, he retired as the Chiefs all-time rushing yards and TD leader (since has been surpassed)

- Everytime we heard sport commentators call him "The Nigerian Nightmare', we smiled

Name: Nwankwo Kanu

Sport: Football (Soccer)

Signature Celebration: The two-fingered salute

Why we love him:

- One of the most highly decorated African footballers in history

- Led the Nigerian national team to the 1996 Olympic Gold Medal at the Olympics

- Only current English Premiership player to have won the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Cup, Premiership, FA Cup and an Olympic Gold Medal

- Part of the legendary undefeated 2003-2004 Arsenal team which captured the Premiership Title

- Two-time African footballer of the year (1996, 1999)

Who are your favorites? Or who would you consider on the level of those above? Reply so we can determine who the greatest Nigerian athlete of all time really should be.

On the women side, I pick Jumoke Bodunrin (Track and Field). She was once the fastest African woman. She represented Nigeria in the Olympics in the 60s.

On the men side I will vote for either Teslim Balogun alias Thunder Balogun or Sam Garba alias Garba Okoye (Soccer) of the Old Mighty Jets of Jos. Their names should be immortalized in Nigeria Soccer. They paved the way for the Okochas, Martins and Kanus of today.

Best Nigerian athlete is Francis Obikwelu.
100m/200m Specialist.
Olympic and World Medalist. Consistently top World ranked sprinter for over 10yrs.

Hakeem Olajuwon is also. NBA Championship. Defensive Player of the year. First center to have point guard qualities. Future Hall of Famer, and arguably one of the best, If not THE best Center in NBA history.

As a boxing afficionado, I have to nominate two-time undisputed middleweight champion and undisputed light-heavyweight champion of the world, ring magazine fighter of the years 1962 and 1965, Commander of the British Empire (CBE) - Richard "Dick Tiger" Ihetu. For more information, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dick_Tiger

Cannot forget the impact of Mercy Akide has had on Nigerian women's football over the years

Also, remember that Victor Ikpeba was stellar, and that he also won Africa footballer of the year, just like Kanu

chioma ajunwa. first, and to date only individual olympic gold medallist from Nigeria. At one time she was also a soccer player at the national level, and a pretty quick 100 meters runner. she's the ultimate athlete..

As a Kenyan, Vincent Ebugnike gets my vote. His feats at the '87 All Africa games in Nairobi are memorable. Nigeria had to win the 4x400 relay, the last event of the games to overhaul Kenya at the top of the medals table. Running anchor, Kenya was easily 30 meters ahead at baton change. He ran Kenya down and Nigeria won the games. I wish I had the footage. Honorable mention to Chidi Imoh and Bright Omukaro.

Nwankwo Kanu is the greatest of them all. Yes the other must have achieved a lot but Kanu has greater achievements than all of them which makes him the greatest of them all.
