Former Nigeria international Jay Jay Okocha returns to English soccer with Hull – International Herald Tribune

Former Nigeria international Jay Jay Okocha is returning to English soccer after agreeing to a two-year contract at League Championship side Hull.

"I think he is the sort of player who will give us the creativity we need in midfield," Hull manager Phil Brown said.

The former Bolton midfielder was a free agent after being released from his contract with Qatar SC.

Renowned for his dribbling skills and powerful shot, Okocha made 145 appearances for Bolton, scoring 18 goals. Brown was Bolton’s assistant manager when Okocha was at the club.

Okocha, 34, played more than 70 matches for Nigeria, and was part of the team that won gold at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

Are you out of your mind by making that comment, that okocha should return to the national team? The football you watch these days are not for his caliber any more + kanu, the young ones should take the mantle now and lead in the improvement of our football.

I agree … He’s fallen off the radar a bit, his presence is always appreciated on the National side — though I didn’t realize he’s reached his mid 30s now.

It is my pleasure to hear that Okocha has returned to the field of play.My advise is that the Nff should try to call him back to the national team because we are still missing his darling role in that team.

WE STILL COULDN’T REPLACE HIM. HE’S THE KING OF SOCCER. THIS IS WHEN THOSE WHO DEFRAUDED HIM IN HIS OWN LAND WILL APPRECIATE HIM. SO NOONE SHOULD BLAME HIM FOR NOT PLAYING FOR HIS COUNTRY; RATHER BLAME HIS COUNTRY MEN FOR CREATING FEAR FOR HIM.

I think we need Jay Jay in the Nigeria Coaching crew. He’s got the sort of experience that cannot be quantify. Instead of paying so much money to Bertis Vogts who doesnt even have a clue what contemporary football is all about. His style is soo rusty, he still plays football from the wings and long passes.

I mean common, who does that nowadays. Football is played from the middle. I wonder what NFA was thinking about when they employ him.

I am quite positive that Jay has got a lot to offer than Bertis nonsensical football.

Okocha is a magician, he has given is best to an apparently ungrateful country called Nigeria, l wish him the best.
To choose to play for Hull is a refection of so many things: His love and interest of the game; His dwindling performance, not as per skill, which is innate but we all recognise that football is a game of not only skill but physical fitness, which dwindles as you get older; its a natural progression.
Nigerians are used to not telling the truth or calling a spade a spoon, if not, they will not be clamouring for Okocha at 34 years ( and that is a “declared age”, in reality, he is in his early to mid-forties, just ask his childhood mates that they played football with!)
I hope he would still be able to contribute o Nigerian football but he must start preparing himself, by brushing-up his “managerial knowledge” of the game; maybe one day, e would be a coach of one of our National teams and transfer his “aura and skill” to the younger ones otherwise, he may do that in a private capacity as a club-coach.
We love him, we admire him, we will miss him but its better to bow-out when the ovation is loudest. No one can play ‘active football’ forever, not even the legendary Pele!

The man’s a genius and a great man. Have met him and can confirm he meets expectations. Don’t know about his “real” age but he has had a few injuries since being with us (Hull City) and just making his comeback. Can still control a game from centre of midfield and made a fool of Greening from WBA. Go Jay Jay!

No doubt about what Okocha has done both in our National team as well as other country’s leagues. Jay jay has resign from palying football ease were but not from himself and country. i believe that he should be approve to handle grassroot football academy nationaly to breed ups young talent with skills like himself. what the NFA, NFL should look into. know that he has indeed serve the nation so let give him a All Afrikan National Merit Aword (AANMA) right here at home. he is the best / world best player FIFA/the world had never recorgnised. thanks

okocha is a great player that is true bur since he has decided to hang his shoe why should him come back, they should give chance to the young player to shine up and take the team to a greater height. Is a shame for him coming back because is like a dog going back to its vomits.
